‘Alopecia’ is the medical term for hair loss. Alopecia areata is a form of hair loss characterized by patchy hair loss affecting hair bearing areas of the body, particularly the scalp and beard. When the hair falls out, it usually results in totally smooth and bare patches about the size of a coin or larger. Alopecia areata can, though rare, result in complete loss of scalp and body hair. Alopecia areata may occur unexpectedly as patchy hair loss and the hair may in some cases regrow without any intervention.

Alopecia areata is generally considered to be an autoimmune disorder and the hair loss is caused by the immune system attacking the hair follicles, resulting in shedding of hair in affected areas.

Alopecia areata may affect children or adults of any age and occurs in 1-2% of the population.

Affected persons are generally in good health. Early age of onset, involvement of the back of the scalp, large area of involvement and history of other autoimmune diseases may affect the chances of hair regrowth negatively.

Alopecia Areata may be treated pharmaceutically with monthly injections of corticosteroid.

‘Alopecia’ is the medical term for hair loss. Androgenic Alopecia is the term used to describe both male and female pattern baldness. It is generally considered to be caused by the hair growing tissue's sensitivity to androgens, which is a family of hormones which includes testosterone.

Testosterone inactivates hair follicles on the scalp, while it stimulates hair follicles on the face and elsewhere on the body. These effects are obvious in men: Higher testosterone levels give less hair on the scalp and more on the body. Testosterone has the same effects in women.

Testosterone also makes the skin and scalp more oily and may also trigger acne.

Androgenic Alopecia is extremely common. It is estimated that it affects as many as 50% of men. The prevalence in women is reported to be up to 20% prior to menopause, while it increases to more than 40% after that, and, according to some, it may affect as many as 75% of women older than 65 years.

Androgenic Alopecia causes a progressive thinning or loss of hair, which may develop slowly over years. It generally does not effect children or teens, but may occur any time after the age of 20.

Androgenic Alopecia sufferers often have a family history of hair loss, but also people without a family history can be affected.

Anemia is a condition resulting from an unusually low number of red blood cells or too little hemoglobin in the red blood cells. The most common type is iron-deficiency anemia in which the red blood cells are reduced in size and number, and hemoglobin levels are low.

Iron deficiency anemia can contribute to hair loss, while the more severe clinical symptoms include shortness of breath, lethargy and in extreme cases heart palpitations.

Anti-androgens are a class of drugs that blocks the effects in the body of androgens, which are male sex hormones such as testosterone. Systemic anti-androgens (tablets, capsules, injection) are used, often in combination with other drugs, to treat prostate cancer, severe hirsutism in women and other diseases. They may also be used to treat androgenic alopecia.

Anti-androgens come as steroids as well as non-steroids.
